What Is a Car Laptop Charger?

A Car laptop charger is a car laptop DC adapter that can be used inside a car to power a laptop and charge it. An in-car laptop charger makes it easier for you to work while you are driving. These are also called cigarette lighter chargers since they plug in to the cigarette lighter socket for receiving power.

How Does It Work?

All notebooks, laptops and netbooks use DC power to run and charge the battery. The power outlet inside a car (the cigarette lighter) also has DC power. So these chargers are basically equipped to take that power and bring the voltage to the rating that matches the laptop being charged. These are not just wires to connect your laptop to the cigarette lighter’s power supply. You will notice that the input power rating is different from the output power rating, signifying the fact that there’s some amount of transformation of power going on inside.

How Safe Is It?

Given that you purchase the charger from Smart Parts, you should have no problems whatsoever. Both your car and your laptop will be running smoothly. However, you must ensure that the charger is matched properly with the laptop that you use. Both the charging tip and the voltage rating need to match your device.

Differences between a Car Charger and Normal Charger

The main difference, technically speaking, between the two chargers is that the usual wall charger has an AC/DC converter because domestic power supply is AC (110V or 200V) and the notebook requires DC power (12V to 20V). Otherwise, they are both designed to supply a certain voltage of DC power to the laptop through a compatible charging tip. An in-car laptop charger is much more compact and usually has a coiled wire to help in wire management and stretch across to the back of the car. Also, a cigarette lighter charger is, of course, meant for the cigarette lighter socket found inside cars.

Car Laptop Charger Troubleshooting

These chargers are fairly simple and hence perform well over a long period. In case it is not charging properly or at all, start by checking whether it has been properly plugged into the cigarette lighter socket. Next, check the main wire that connects the charger to the laptop. Also check for fraying around the base of the charging tip. If the wire is damaged or the converter inside is not working, you will have to get a replacement charger.
